Outbound Programmes

Outbound Programme is a short-term study programme offered to UTAR students to pursue high quality Academic Exchange Programme or Internship Programme in another institution/ university or industry, local or abroad, with partner universities/ institutions or non-partner universities/ institutions.

Objectives

To experience student life in a partner university/institution overseas
To learn more about the culture, people and its country

To exchange ideas, experiences and learning skills

To encourage more international exposure

Outbound Academic Exchange Programme

UTAR students may choose to join partner institutions for a semester or up to one academic year from a list of more than 28 economies, which includes China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, United States of America, Spain, Canada, Kenya and etc., for the Academic Exchange Programme. The past few years saw about one thousand UTAR students benefitting culturally and academically from this Programme.


Requirements 
  1. Applicants must be full-time UTAR undergraduate students. 
  2. The duration of study must be one trimester or up to maximum one academic year. Applicants are advised to consult their faculty Dean and Centre for Extension Education (CEE) staff prior to making any decisions on an exchange. 
  3. Applicants on an academic exchange may attend classes with or without seeking credit transfers at host institution. Applicants need to fulfill all attendance and programme requirements at host institution while ensuring that the requirements of UTAR are not breached during the exchange. Written approval and advice from the respective Deans/ Head of Department at UTAR are required prior to embarking on the exchange programme.

  5. All exchange students must return to UTAR to complete their undergraduate studies. The conferment of degrees/awards upon completion of studies will be under UTAR not the host institution.



Application procedures 
  1. All application for exchange programmes must be directed to the Centre for Extension Education (CEE) at UTAR. 
  2. The required application documents:
    a. A completed preliminary form (applicable for SEA universities that provide Free accommodation and/or allowance only).
    b. A completed outbound application form (with Faculty Dean and HoD’s signature) and a passport size photo.
    c. A letter of recommendation from Dean and stating the purpose of joining the programme at Host University.
    d. A letter of confirmation from the home university to prove that the applicant is enrolled as a full-time student.
    e. One set of academic transcripts.  
    The following additional documents are required for Student pass and Visa Application:
    a. A copy of passport (only pages with passport number, photo, issuance and expiry dates).
    b. One photocopy of the approved Leave of Absence application form (if applicable).
    c. One passport-sized colour photograph with white background ONLY (4.5cm x 3.5cm).
    d. Evidence of VISA approval, insurance policy, and etc. (if relevant).

Fees & Expenses 
Partner institutions 
  1. UTAR students pay tuition fees only to UTAR not the host institution for the exchange programme. 
  2. The amount of tuition fees payable depend on the number of courses taken where credit transfers are requested and approved. The tuition fee per credit hour is based on UTAR standard rates. No registration and administrative fees are charged for the exchange programme unless agreed by both institutions. 
  3. Courses taken at host institution where credit transfers are not sought will not be charged tuition fee by UTAR but may be charged by the host institution depending on the terms of the agreement which may vary between partner institutions. 
  4. Applicants are responsible for the return air fare, transport, meals, accommodation, books, stationery and other living expenses while on the exchange programme. Visa and travel documentation charges imposed by the host country are generally paid by UTAR applicants prior to departure. 

Non-Partner institutions 
  1. UTAR students are required to pay the programme tuition fees and all other miscellaneous fees charged by the host institution. 
  2. The amount of tuition fees charged will depend on the courses/credits enrolled and the duration of study at host institutions. 
  3. Applicants are required to pay for the visa, return airfare, transport, meals, accommodation, books, stationery and other living expenses during the exchange programme at the host institution.


Outbound Internship Exchange Programme

Students can opt to undertake one semester or up to one academic year for internship at a host institution local or overseas. Through this programme, students gain valuable experiences for their personal and career developments; they observe, learn and develop their interpersonal and communication skills. Besides that, it is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in different countries’ work culture and expand their global network.


Requirements 

  1. Applicants can opt to undertake a period of internship at a host institution local or overseas, provided approval is sought at UTAR. The duration of internship can be two weeks or up to one academic year. Applicants are advised to choose MoU/MoA partner institutions/industries/NGOs (please refer to ‘Collaborative Partners’) for their internship. 
  2. No stipend or allowance for the internship at a host institution. No tuition, registration and administrative fees are charged unless stated otherwise and agreed by both institutions. 
  3. Applicants must return to UTAR to continue and complete their programme of study. The awarding of a degree is by UTAR, not the host institution. 
  4. Written approvals and recommendation from UTAR and a brief of the internship must be provided during the application for the exchange programme. 
  5. Applicants pay for their return airfare, accommodation, transport, meals, stationery, insurance and other living expenses for the duration of their exchange programme at the host institution.

  


Application procedures 

  1. The application form for both academic exchange and internship can be obtained here with passport photo. 
  2. Required documents for submission:
    i. One certified copy of the full UTAR Notification of Exam Results
    ii. Letter of recommendation from the Head of Department / Dean and stating the purpose of joining the programme at Host University
    iii. One photocopy of the approved leave of absence application form (if applicable)
    iv. One passport-sized colour photograph with white background ONLY (4.5cm x 3.5cm)
    v. One photocopy of passport (photo and issuance date page)
    vi. Evidence of visa approval (if relevant)
    vii. Indemnity letters
    viii. One Photocopy of flight ticket information (after approval)

  3. Submit hard copies of the above documents & application form to Centre for Extension Education (CEE) either at Sungai Long Campus or Kampar Campus and send soft copies to mobility.cee@utar.edu.my

  1. Applicants are advised to check host universities' website for programme information and the commencement date of the chosen semester. The list of Mou / MoA partners can be obtained here. Application should preferably commence 6 months prior to departure date. 
  2. Applications are subject the approval by both UTAR and the selected host institution. Once approved, the letter of admission will be issued by the selected host institution. Applicants do the necessary documentations before commencing the overseas studies including passport and visa application, health and travel insurance, ticketing and all other relevant preparations. 
All the hardcopy of submission will not be returned.
